Smartphone Cameras

use of smartphones, both Android and iPhones, have seen a remarkable improvement of camera technology. Each iteration of all the major phone brands has seen a big improvements in what such a little camera with a small lens can achieve.

How the cell phone camera came to be

Cell phone solve Miniaturization

to replicate the full features of a digital SLR camera in a small smartphone body is simply not possible – the miniaturization makes this infeasible.

Multiple Camera Solution

The solution to this conundrum, is to add more camera devices to the same phone. Top end smartphones have three or more cameras dedicated to specific task. So rather than having one camera trying to be a Jack-of-all-Trades we have miniature devices designed to do one specialist photographic task and do it very well.

Add a touch of Software

Cameras, no matter how many you build into a cell phone body, will still have limitations on what they can do – given the physics the underlies the field of optics. However smartphone manufacturers have managed to mitigate this dilemma, somewhat, by the use of software.

Software in itself can’t give pin point sharp images if the sensor is unable to deliver these in the first instance. But by combining software with multiple cameras devices and a whole new world of possibilities opens up.

Software is able to take images from multiple camera devices, taken at exactly the same time, combine these images together. And produce technically stunning beautiful images that could match any mid-range dSLR camera.

Camera Shake

Camera shake has plagued the world of photography, since – forever. The problem is most prominent in dark or darkish settings, in order to take a photo the camera has to let in more light. Which means a slow shutter speed.

Hand holding a camera at low shutter speed will inevitably cause a blurred image. Software has again come to the rescue here by adding a feature that tries to eliminate camera shake.

Smartphone Tripod

One way to get the benefit of a small form factor camera offered by a cell phone and its superb camera devices is to purchase a phone tripod. A Bluetooth camera release button allows you to take the image without touching the smartphone.

The result is low light level photos that can match the quality of a more expense, difficult to set up digital SLR.

Smartphones have come on a long way since their early days (over 10 years ago now). The camera devices have gotten better and smaller, the software has improved immensely and packing the cell phone body with more cameras has added to the smartphone’s capabilities.

Now anyone with a smartphone can take impressive images. In fact it’s quite hard to take a bad image these days. You don’t need any photographic training because the cameras know (guess) what you’re trying to do.

However a bit of photographic knowledge is still quite useful because the rules of photography (composition, light, optics) are still the same and will never change. Having this knowledge helps the smartphone camera, help you, to get the best results you can.
